It's okay to think of AVION as a companion to Mark E's Product of Industry LP, but it's not absolutely necessary. The longstanding UK DJ/producer described his latest full-length as "grinding, continuous, heavy, and relentless" when it dropped earlier this year, making this EP's four brand-new originals more breezy and sumptuous in comparison. "Molyneaux" and "Avion Central" try on rounded and shimmering synth patterns over each steady drum-machine pulse, and remixes from White Material's Alvin Aronson and Laszlo Dancehall (a.k.a. Leon Vynehall and Christian Piers) touch on lighthearted hardware techno and soft-focus house grooves, respectively.
But Mark E's hard-hitting jams are still represented on AVION, and they are in fine form. Easily the record's heaviest track, "Clares Gate" comes bounding out of the gate with a bulbous analog bassline and crunchy drums, assuming the position of this record's go-to peaktime crowd pleaser. "The 535" meshes together AVION's different modes, and stands as an affable representation of how accomplished Mark E truly is at this point in his career—the blend of shuffling rhythms, atonal FX, cosmic synth pads, and bubbly low end would be hard pressed to sound so cohesive and keenly modern in another producer's hands.
